On the 10th of September Ubisoft had their latest Ubisoft Forward event, where they showcased some new gameplay and updates from previously announced games. Today I’m going to talk about what I thought about the main show from Ubisoft.
Ubisoft has had some controversy recently, with seemingly some of the worst the gaming industry has to offer. Zack, our other writer, covered some of this recently, read it here. Let me say that this was not the ideal way to do it. However the head of Ubisoft did record a separate message acknowledging the wrong that has been done. Although they deemed not to attach it to the main event, for some reason.
Ubisoft’s abysmal management aside, the Forward itself was pretty good. Not the best event we’ve had this year but for the most part, not bad mate. Some cool trailers and new information, along with a couple of cool new things.
The order will basically be in order of “I feel like it“ to be honest. Without further ado, let’s get on with it!
Stormzy in Watch Dogs: Legion
Now I don’t mind telling you that I am an advocate for rock and metal music. I occasionally dabble in some drum and bass, and a little trance but it’s mostly the metal stuff. I can obviously recognise when someone has talent, even outside metal. It’s not particularly controversial to say that Stormzy’s alright.
So to see him working with Watch Dogs is pretty exciting, to me anyway. What was shown was a teaser of some BTS and some of his new music video. For the song Rainfall.
Firstly, I don’t mind telling you that it’s an absolute banger.
Secondly, the video appears to be a fully motion captured Stormzy in the Watch Dogs: Legion world. Which is undeniably awesome on it’s own!
There will also be a specific mission in the final game somehow related to this new song and video. All round, a great announcement, that you can see below.
There was also some new information regarding the recruitment of citizens. What really caught my eye was the customization of weapons and gadgets assigned to your members. Examples like a missile drone and spider bot. I don’t think I need to elaborate further there. They really speak for themselves, as to why you’d want to use them!
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition
This is a pretty big one, for the fans anyway. Having basically lost the game as a whole it’s fantastic to see this game return.
Just as a side note for myself. Scott Pilgrim is probably in my top 5 movies of all time. I freaking love this thing! It’s not relevant for this piece but I thought I’d share that anyway!
We were treated to a pretty short announcement trailer for the 10th anniversary of the game. It confirmed that the game obviously exists, again, now. Also that it includes the Knives and Wallace add-on packs.
Confirmed for a Holiday 2020 release, onto Xbox One, Switch, PS4, and Stadia. I am pretty hecker excited for this one!
Breath of the Wild 2 Gameplay?
I have no doubt that this is not an original joke or anything, it’s still funny though!!
We actually got a lot of new information, footage, and gameplay for the formerly Gods and Monsters. Now named Immortals Fenyx Rising.
From what I have seen online the name change is due to a legal action from Monster Energy. The name is worse, yes, but it’s not the worst name I’ve ever heard. So I guess there’s that?
Fenyx Rising is not subtle about the level of inspiration that it has taken from Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Now it makes sense because BotW is pretty highly regarded, it’s just a little on the nose in places.
What I will say for Fenyx Rising is that the story seems interesting at least. I love Greek mythology and the combat and skill unlocks are looking pretty awesome.
All in all, I’m quietly excited for Fenyx Rising, so I hope that it can deliver. Launching on the 3rd of December, onto basically everything, including smart delivery for next gen!
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake..?
There were some rumours and leaks suggesting this was coming but it was still kind of a surprise. I am mixed with this one.
On the one hand, I have deep nostalgia for the original Sands of Time. Having borrowed it from my grandad as a kid on PS2.
On the other hand, the character models are a bit yikes! The world looks pretty good, environments and lighting look really good as well. The faces. Oh the faces. It’s not good.
It should be noted that the footage shown was claimed to be from an alpha build. How outdated it is or not, I’m not sure. The main ray of hope in this is the gameplay, which was the main reason I liked it all those years ago.
The almost dance-like combat, for sure the free running, and the time manipulation. I would almost be willing to give the faces a pass, if it captures the whimsy.
The issues though are exacerbated by the fact that this game is set to release in January 2021. Which is also worrying if they can only show alpha builds of the game.
Weirder still, only on current gen platforms. Thus far there have been no mentions of Series X/S or PS5.
This I think was a very big surprise, I’d not even seen a hint online about this. Not that I have all my fingers in all the pies. But still. Ride Republic is a brand new IP for Ubisoft. It is a multiplayer extreme sport “simulator”? Kind of.
Frankly it looks mad.
I would like to point to something particular they said during the presentation. They based the maps off of real world nature parks. The idea, I believe, is that they are pretty genuine representations of the real deal.
That’s not only really cool but quite exciting. The idea that you could go away on a trip and see a hill that you BMXed down. Or you see a slope you skied down in game.
My one real gripe with this showing was that it went on for a little too long. I know it was something brand new and they were excited. I can fully understand that and rightfully so.
It could have just done with being a few minutes shorter. Then in a few weeks or something have a full showing of the game on its own. But as usual, that’s just my opinion.
Rainbow 6 Siege – World Cup
So for Seige, there were actually 2 pieces of information that we gained.
So first off, we found out that they are putting together a Siege World Cup for summer 2021. That alone is pretty mad. It will mirror the football world cup in that way.
If they manage to pull it off this could be very big for ESports. Getting the same kind stardom as Olympic sports for example. It’s an interesting thought!
The other news we got was that the next Operator would be Sam Fisher. If you don’t know who that is, he’s the protagonist of the Splintercell franchise. Zack was upset, and doesn’t understand why Ubisoft refuse to make a new Splinter Cell game.
Along with the outright reveal, we got a very cool animated short. It had a fantastic art style and some pretty good action. I highly recommend a watch!
Hyperscape – Turbo Mode
This was the announcement that I was least interested in. I’ve not played the game and I don’t like Battle Royales.
The news we got was for a new limited time game mode, named Turbo Mode. It seems to just turn all the dials up to 11.
Check out the trailer to get some more info on what this new mode entails. TURBO mode is set to launch on the 15th of September!
So all in all, the Forward main presentation wasn’t too bad! Some good new info and reveals with some promise.
Not everything hit home, some things definitely need some work and elbow grease. That’s just my opinion of course!
Did you watch the Ubisoft Forward? What did you think? And what was your favourite announcement of the show?
